Jamaican Prisoners Allowed To Have Sexual Intercourse

National Security Minister, Robert Montague said he believes that allowing inmates to have sexual relations with their partners will be beneficial.

Mr. Robert Montague, the National Security Minister was addressing participants at the Jamaica 55 Diaspora Conference in downtown Kingston yesterday afternoon when he made the announcement about introducing conjugal visits for inmates.

In a continuous effort by the Government to introduce initiatives that will lead to the rehabilitation of inmates, Minister Montague cited that prisoners should have sexual relations with their partners, which he believes will be beneficial for the inmates.

The National Security Minister disclosed that inmates were reclassified and those dubbed hardened criminals have been separated from the inmates with a less heinous felony.

Also, the age-old issue of overcrowding in the prison is being addressed as more space is now being created.

Additionally, more inmates have been introduced into the work program the prison has and inmates are the ones who produced food that is used to prepare the two meals provided by the prison daily.

The National Security Minister also stated that the cellular phone jammers have been restored at the island correctional facilities to aid in the reduction of criminal activities.

Minister Montague noted that Jamaica has a 47 per cent rate of recidivism (the tendency of a convicted criminal to re-offend).

Among the other initiates by the Government to rehabilitate inmates is a selection process to have inmates perform at the Jamaica 55 celebrations.
